A Consumer’s Guide to Used Digital Cameras

Shopping for used digital cameras can be time-consuming and even a bit confusing. However, by asking the right questions and doing a little research, a shopper can end up with an excellent camera at a fraction of the cost of newer models.

Olympus C 750 Ultra Zoom

This model is popular with photographers due to its wide zoom range. The 10x optical zoom plus a 4x digital zoom increases the lens range to a total 40x zoom, which allows photographers to leave heavy and bulky zoom lenses behind. The C 750 also features an aspherical glass lens that more evenly distributes light across the sensor. This facilitates a sharper and more even exposure whether far away or at close range, for both bright colors and details. This model is one of the more popular used digital cameras with consumers as well, garnering 4.5 stars out of 5 stars in CNET.com’s customer review rating program.

Pentax Optio Si 4

This little model is one of the smaller used digital cameras on the market, but is loaded with impressive features. There are seven picture modes, and a movie mode with sound. It has 12 MB of internal memory, and is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery; a recharger is included with some used models. A very popular model with consumers, this was rated 5 stars out of 5 on Amazon.com’s customer review rating system.

Nikon Coolpix 4800

This camera is a more flexible model – it has unmatched Macro-shooting capability (less than ½“), as well as wide-angle and long telephoto shooting abilities, and a movie mode with audio soundtrack. It can provide prints as large as 11” by 17”, and produces very clear and sharp images due to its 8.3x optical Zoom-Nikkor lens. This model also features 15 Scene Modes, four of which include Scene Assist, which facilitates focus and framing. This model was highly rated by consumers buying used digital cameras, receiving 4.2 stars out of 5 stars on Amazon.com’s customer review rating system.

Leica D-Lux 2 8.4 MP

Leica is one of the most expensive cameras both in the new and used digital cameras market, but the company is renowned for their high standards and professional quality features that make these cameras a favorite with both amateur and professional photographers. With 8.4 megapixels, an image stabilizer, and its optics, this model performs beautifully in any light, whether close up or far away. The range of focal lengths extends from 28 to 112 mm (35 mm equivalent), which includes almost every shot in the wide-angle to telephoto range. This model received 4.4 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com’s customer review rating system.

Canon A 75

This model features a macro setting that allows clear focus as close as 2” away from the subject, and offers a 3x zoom with a 3.2 digital zoom the equivalent of 35-105mm. There is also a 9-point autofocus system, and a movie mode. An image transfer system allows images to be downloaded to either Macs or PCs via USB connectivity. A print/share button facilitates faster and easier printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge enable printers, and a Movie Print mode can divide selected clips into thumbnails and print out equally-spaced frames. This model received 3.8 stars out of 5 stars on Amazon.com’s customer review rating system.

Buying a used digital camera can be a great way to save money. However, consumers should understand the various aspects involved in dealing with the used camera market, and ask about the model’s functionality, warranty and any missing accessories. Compatibility with the desired computer system is also critical.
